Anyone familiar with this concept? I read about it quite frequently in stuff by Richard Rohr but I wonder, is this something theology has to take into account?

Like you, I read about it in posts from Richard Rohr. It reminds me of the scene from C. S. Lewis' The Great Divorce where a little man has a big man on a string and wants his heavenly visitor to talk only to the big man - his false identity.
Richard Rohr draws on Matthew Fox's theology. Have you read Original Blessing by Fox? I think the theological issue there has to do with the fallen nature of man. Are we evil at our core or good? Unless we are good at our core, there is no inner "true self" worth revealing.

Is Rohr drawing from the Jungian concept of the shadow self (an unconscious/dark aspect of the personality which the conscious ego is unaware of)?

My take on the theological implications is this is addressed as part of the lifelong process of being shaped into the image of Christ. I am being "sanctified" today from things I couldn't name or address about myself 10 years ago. I expect that 10 years from now I will be able to say the same thing. One of my favorite verses I think describes this is Hebrews 10:14 - "For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy."
